Wedding Musicians: Five Hints before You Book

Auto Date Monday, February 1st, 2010

Staging for live wedding music is just one of about a thousand jobs facing brides and grooms and wedding planners. Between flowers, photos, locales, dresses, parties, rings, video recording, and more, even a modest and unpretentious wedding makes for a great amount of planning. It can be a stressful time because if even one of these areas falls through the cracks, your big day can end up being a big letdown.

Here are five secrets to engaging live wedding music players for your ceremony and reception:

1. Make a point to you hire a musician with a tried track record of professionalism. Does the manager return your calls promptly? Does the band have a web site? Business cards? Other promotional materials? Or do you get the impression you’re speaking to a guy rehearsing in his garage with his pals? The way the band presents itself as you begin talking with them is a genuine indicator of how they’ll come on (or not!) on your special day.

2. Promptness is essential. When you set an date to connect face to face or on the phone, it’s like a mini-contract. If the band handler is tardy to meet with you, it’s a warning sign that they don’t take their agreements seriously. If they can’t come through on time in the planning stage, what other agreements will they abandon with you on your wedding day? This carries on to you, likewise - being punctual is just one way you can live a life that shows that you respect your commitments.

3. Make certain the dance band is easy-going rather than being a bunch of prima donnas. By now you’ve probably heard a million Bridezilla jokes, even if you’re not hard to please or extreme. Imagine employing the equal in flakiness for your wedding band. The last thing you need on your wedding day is to have to wait on your musicians hand and foot, delivering them food and drink, having the thermostat adjusted for them, or tending to other exacting needs. The best band for you is one that can take care of itself, one that’s easy to get along with, and one that does all it can to make sure your day is easy and fun for you.

4. Employ a wedding band that’s fun. Getting married is one of the biggest decisions you’ll ever make. It’s important business. The music on your wedding day should be enjoyable and fun. You don’t want to see your guests inattentive, listless, and wishing the event was all over. You want them up, dancing, singing, and smiling. If you choose a live wedding music band well, your selection will do lots to make your wedding day memorable in a good way. This is the big day you’ve been waiting for, and music is such a important part of it. Be sure you hire a dance band that makes the day ideal - pleasurable for you and your invitees.

Table Skirts - Ideal for All Affairs

Auto Date Monday, June 15th, 2009

The feeling of any event, whether it be formal or casual, can be defined by using table skirts. It is on banquet tables at wedding receptions and presentation tables at company affairs that table skirts are most commonly known to be used. Table skirts are comprised of a length of fabric that is connected to the edge of a table with a set of discrete clamps. Pleated table skirts and shirred table skirts are the two most common varieties of table skirts used.

If you are trying to find table skirts that will complete the look of a particular function, conference or presentation, consider choosing table skirts in a color that complement the table cloths. For example, if you are using theme printed table cloths, opt for colored table skirts that highlight one of the solid colors that are found in the theme print of the table cloths. Some companies choose to complement their logo colors or the materials that they are exhibiting when they choose their table skirts. Table skirts not only complete the look of a table, they also hide unsightly table legs or items that are being kept beneath the table.

The use of table skirts does not have to be limited to a special occasion or company affair. You can use table skirts when you host an event in your home. A large number of casual in-home affairs serve food buffet style. The provisions you use for setting up or cleanup can be concealed below the table and in back of the table skirts. You can also store extra table napkins and equipment in back of the table skirts. This helps make entertaining simpler for you because you do not need to continue running back and forth between the kitchen and the table.

An online wholesale company is a terrific source for table skirts. When you have a non-standard sized table, they can furnish you with tailored table skirts. Choose from cloth such as satins, metallics, lace, theme prints, sheers and even velvets and velours for the table skirts when you have them made-to-order. After all, not all table skirts need to be made from blended polyester.

Besides table skirts, internet wholesalers also provide table cloths, chair coverings, table napkins, placemats and table lighting accessories. The table linens you need can be found in a variety of colors, fabrics and sizes for everything from your own dining room to a conference center or restaurant. Many people learn that using table skirts, in addition to other table linens, allows them to bring a creative touch to their occasion’s decor.

Auto Date Sunday, May 10th, 2009

There are a large number of board games that are classics and have stood the test of time. These people often have a large collection of them and they are always looking for something new. But, the fact is, that some games are must-haves. These games have transcended generations and we hold them dear to our hearts. This list has been compiled after aggregating results from several sources. Our global top 5 list is:

1. Monopoly: This is one of the world’s most well known board games. The game is a game of real estate, purchasing property, developing it and then making sure others lose their money before you do. This board game has a number of different versions to reach from young kids to the most sophisticated of all professionals. There are deluxe editions as well as fun loving Disney editions, sports editions, and even cat and dog-opoly! One or more of the various flavors of this game is likely to hang around for years to come.

The true testament that this game is truly global is that the current world champion hails from Thailand.

3. Chess: Chess goes as far back as the 7th century. The game is strategy at its best. It is one game that many will study, learn, and spend a life learning again. It’s a game you learn to love as you pick up more strategies with time. Chess has an extremely large following of people. 4. Checkers: is another popular board game. Everyone recognizes the black and red checkered board and it is one of the simplest of games to learn. It has been around since about the 1500’s where people began playing with far less interesting pieces.

5. Life: This is a relatively newer game in comparison to the other four. This is designed to be, well, like real life. Go through and make choices that will eventually effect what you can and cannot do in life. A game with plenty of options and each choice will take you in a completely different direction. This game and its different varieties such as the Simpson’s version continue to hold promise for many years to come.

Home Theater Design, Surround Sound Wiring

Auto Date Wednesday, May 6th, 2009

Home Theater design is not a new idea, but it sure is a growing one! With the prices of large screen displays dropping substantially, the average tv viewing has increased. Many folks now have a reciver for video and a receiver for audio. Not to mention, a DVD player and VHS, high definition, surround sound, sub woofers and even high definition. Quite a jump from the 13″ black and white televisions of our past.

Most people are finding that not only have the costs of large screen displays dropped, but so has their audio counterparts. You can now purchase speakers individually, or in a package. Receivers can be used to power the audio from your DVD player, CD player, Satellite or Cable reception or even your FM radio. A good quality “home theater in a box” can be had for as little as $300 now days and will provide an obvious increase in viewing pleasure.

Because of the volume and recent price drops, many people are now taking into account Home Theater Design. “Surround Sound Wiring” is possible the most difficult part. Did you know there are many types of speaker wire that you can use? Speaker Wire can be had in many gauges, shapes, and lengths. You can find Flat Speaker Wire, or Round Speaker Wire. The surround sound wiring you plan to do can make a big difference on what type you chose to use.

If you plan to run your wire through the walls, using a less expensive round speaker wire is fine. The only downfall to running it through the walls is that if you don’t plan for it ahead of time, you will find yourself constantly running into unexpected headaches while trying to drill holes and whatnot. However, when it is all said and done a good quality Audio Video Wall Plate will really clean up your project and leave you with a professional finish.

If you still perfer round speaker wire, but don’t want to drill, you can now use a special crown molding thats designed to run speaker wire through it. This will allow you to run speaker wire through your entire home theater, exposing a minimum amount of wire. Be warned, however, that this is not cheap. It does provide another benifit though. The beauty of crown molding throughout your home theater will be sure to get attention.

Another option, is flat speaker wire. Invisiwire is just that. You can run it under carpeting or other floor times, or right up your wall. If you run it up the wall, simply paint over it for a camoflauged look. It’s not 100% hidden, but it’s definately less noticeable and a big help overall. Especially if you aren’t comfortable with drilling holes in your wall.

The last thing to consider when you start your surround sound wiring is the location of the speakers. The average 5.1 surround sound setup has 6 speakers. A Center Channel, two front speakers, two rear speakers, and one sub woofer. Because bass is non direction you can locate the sub anywhere. However, there are some suggestions for the remaining 5.

Locate the center where the tv is. preferrably just above it, but if your tv already sits high, than just below it is fine.

The two fronts should be right around ear level (when you are sitting) on either side of the tv. It’s okay to move them around a bit to find out exactly how far from the tv you want them. When sounds are buzzing through your room you want to be able to distinguish a difference from dead center to far right, this will make viewing more enjoyable and cinematic.

The rears should be above ear level by 12 to 36 inches. Now that is quite a variable. Most settle in around 24 inches. Again, I would suggest using this as a guide line and moving them around a bit until you find the sound that suits you the best.

“Home Theater Design” and “Surround Sound Wiring” are more of an art than anything. You can buy all the right products, and follow all the guidelines, but when it comes down to it… you need to make sure it fits your viewing habits. With a little practice and some fine tuning, you’ll get it just right and you’ll never want to change it!

Defend us from our defenders

A critical look at the erosion of political freedoms in the so-called free world
In defense of a plutocratic definition of democracy, the self-proclaimed free world leaders care little about the freedom of those who find courage enough to disagree. Freedom of thought and expression, peaceful protest and criticism as well as defending civil liberties are less possible than just a year ago. In the name of freedom, western Governments have introduced a series of measures and legislation that curtails many of the freedoms often taken for granted and deeply embedded in an open society. Doors are closing for sure as democratic rights are under pressure to become more conditional or a matter of privilege.

The kind of news and information on TV screens from London to Rome to D.C. is more filtered and less informative today than it has been in many years. Too few citizens appear to notice that what is printed in their daily newspapers, originates from a small circle of news agencies who are more concerned with selling spectacular news items than providing broad news coverage as a commitment to public service. Analytical reports and political criticism “doesn’t sell”, at least not easily and in any case the entertainment value is low. News on TV, presented by near-celebrity speakers in a show business like manner, the importance of content as a defining category for news reporting, simply fades away. Facts and breaking news stories have long replaced investigative journalism and contextual analysis. In the fast-paced virtual world, “info-tainment” rules. Without access to the Internet or if lacking the knowledge of where to “surf”, most citizens are either excluded from alternative news sources or effectively shielded from information that is relevant for understanding local, national and international events. Information choices are put forward on overloaded commercial platforms where items of a critical and/or non-commercial nature are rarely served.

Reporters without borders, a Paris-based association committed to defending press freedom around the world, has just published a first worldwide index of press freedom (http://www.rsf.fr/article.php3?id_articl… . There are several real surprises the report reveals, not least of all the remarkable low score of some western countries commonly believed to be deeply democratic. Thus Hong Kong (18), Benin (21) and Chile (24) easily surpass right-wing Berlusconi’s Italy, ranked 40. The self-proclaimed leaders of the free world, the USA and Britain, fail to make it into the top ten, ranking only 17 and 21, unimpressingly behind Slovenia (14) and Costa Rica (15). Ecuador ranked 20, easily outranks rightist Austria (26) or conservative-led Spain (29). As the organization explains, the “index of press freedom is a portrait of the situation based on events between September 2001 and October 2002. It does not take account of all human rights violations, only those that affect press freedom”. It should be used as an indicator to warn against complacence in guarding press freedom and as it shows clearly, not all is well at home, where gathering, selection and dissemination of news and information is increasingly concentrated in ever fewer individual or corporate hands. In my view, an erosion of independent thought, debate and opinion is occurring throughout so-called advanced democracies. It’s a gradual downward slide, rarely overt or much noticed by the majority of citizens. Many of these citizens may happen to know that “1984″ is the title of a famous book by George Orwell, but most of them would be hard-pressed to say who Rosa Luxemburg was, the revolutionary socialist who upheld that freedom is always the freedom of those of a different opinion.

Diffusely satisfied with the reading and viewing choices available, many citizens in the free world tend to be opinionated rather than well informed about the world around them. Freedom in the free West is evermore reduced or equivalent to freedom of movement: from one local set of alienating social, economic and political conditions to another one, perhaps fifteen hundred miles away. Often failing or at a loss to understand freedom as always in the making, in need of political commitment and personal attachment, citizens across countries, social and political divides accept the picture of freedom presented to them at face value. Only when personal experiences of suspension and limitation of freedoms mount does discontent form and occasionally lead to public action. More questions about freedom, not only press freedom need to be ask and alternative information channels selected and supported, if freedom will be able to rebound from the current assault from within. Undoubtedly, freedom can and must be defended by democratic societies. Informed and open-minded citizens will be able to decide whether actions in far-away places serve freedom and democracy better than preventing the uprooting in our front-yard.

Strange Goings On Over At eBay

Auto Date Thursday, April 30th, 2009

What makes people list some very weird and outrageous items on Ebay?

Is it their ego that drives them? To think that thousands of people will read and maybe even bid on their ridiculous offerings - is that it?

What sort of offerings can be categorised as ’strange’ you might ask?

Well, this author has seen auctions for: virginity (this was removed because let’s face it - that’s prostitution and definitely not something that Ebay really want to promote!), a hilarious auction for a stick - yes a stick! The offending stick was part of a chair which broke when the seller sat on it! He was so outraged that he decided it would be a saleable item. And starting at .01c, he was right! He actually did sell it for close to $1.00 …

Now that doesn’t mean you should all rush out to your local forest and collect firewood and give each piece an interesting history about which to write and offer up on Ebay!

Also seen was a piece of toast! This was so ridiculous, that one TV station in Australia featured that piece of toast on an evening comedy program and the hit counter went berserk after that!
So it seems that anything, which could be classified as ’strange’, has a place on Ebay.

Anyone got any old false teeth perhaps? I’m sure even those would get a bid! Or how about that most horrible ‘thing’ you bought on Ebay, which could be classified as the worst, buying choice you ever made?

I’ve got one of those - what self-respecting Ebay supporter hasn’t?

Thinking it might be fun to buy a wig after having my long hair cut short, I turned to - you guessed it - Ebay - to spend my cash on a wig. Boy oh boy, what a disaster that turned out to be! I purchased this gorgeous looking blonde, long haired, curly looking piece which promised to make me look sexy and turn heads! The only heads this disaster would have turned would have been in true ‘Exorcist’ style!

This ‘thing’ which was advertised as “New, with Tags” was an absolutely revolting disaster! It was made of what can only be described as raffia, was orange in colour and was ‘glued’ in bits to the mesh which fits ‘all sizes of head’ - all but mine, that is!
Too small, too horrible, too funny for words! It now sits on the corner piece of our banister - I keep thinking I’ll paint some eyes and a big red mouth there. It certainly has been a talking point with lots of laughs and wise cracks at ‘mum’s worst Ebay purchase’! It almost seems a shame to sell it now in the ‘weird’ category because ‘Sally’ seems to now have a home here!

Ebay - not just a place to buy and sell - a place to find outrageously funny odds and sods to keep readers of all ages amused!

Star Trek In Flames - No Phoenix In Sight

Auto Date Thursday, April 30th, 2009

As a recovering Trekker, I miss good space science fiction in the theater. I’d hoped Chronicles of Riddick might be some sort of revival of it at the movies, but apparently I’m the only one who doesn’t hate it. Before that, the trailers for Star Trek: Nemesis hinted that it might be at last something different, but as it turns out Berman left most of the Enterprise crew back at space dock. Seriously, did you see the movie? It’s like they spent the entire budget on CGI sets and didn’t have enough money to hire extras to look like they were running the ship. I’m running out of places to turn.

In fact, I’m kind of in a place where I believe it’s time for Star Trek to simply go away for awhile. I’d thought Paramount agreed last week when news leaked out that they were firmly committed to halting all future Star Trek projects for a couple of years. But that worm Berman couldn’t leave it alone, and has since squirmed his way into the ears of Paramount execs and convinced them to give him another shot with the pretty well sunk franchise. What form that chance will take is anyone’s guess, but with Berman at the helm you can be sure it’ll suck. At best it’ll be just another horrible movie, at worst it’ll make somehow manage to make some money and keep Rick “The Federation Con Man” Berman in charge. Not that any of this is a revelation. It’s all been said a hundred times before.

Actually, I’m not truly sure why I’ve bothered writing this. I’ve no new insight to offer on the matter, I simply needed to vent. I loved Star Trek and Rick Berman hates me. Barring Star Trek, some other good space adventures sure would be nice. WB killed the Babylon 5 movie, so forget about that. Without Tom Cruise on board or his lower level equivalent they don’t want to risk it. Imagine if that attitude had been taken when the idea for Star Trek: The Motion Picture was presented. It’s ridiculous that a B5 movie based on a successful franchise with hordes of fans, cannot get made using the original cast when in a few months a movie based on a cancelled TV show will be. I suppose my only hope now is Firefly… but let’s get realistic. No matter how good that movie is, it’ll never make back it’s budget and it isn’t going to revitalize the space-sci-fi genre. It needs a Lord of the Rings to bring it back or a Star Wars that doesn’t feel like a toy line advertisement. Either of those things happening is a long shot, so I guess I’d better hit the bookstore and cozy up with some Heinlein. Maybe when this superhero craze burns out there’ll be room for movies to return to outer space.

Finding the right digital camera printer

Auto Date Friday, April 24th, 2009

Once you have clicked snaps through your digital camera, then the next step is to turn these ‘virtual’ snaps into real snaps. One way is to send the memory card to a digital photo laboratory and get the snaps developed there. But if you click snaps on a regular basis, then it is better that you buy yourself a digital camera printer, or more commonly known as a digital photo printer.
There are lots and lots of choices available in the market today. The top three companies are HP, Canon and Epson. So, before you go and spend your money, here are some tips on what you must keep in mind while deciding on a digital photo printer.
Firstly, digital photo printers are available in two basic types. There are 4-colour printers and 6-colour printers. Nowadays, there are even 8-colour printers available. So, higher the number of colors better will be the photo quality.
Secondly, the printing method used by the printer is also very important. There are 2 main printing methods: inkjet and thermal. Inkjet is commonly used for taking photo prints but the quality of the printout is not excellent. You need to have at least a 6-color printer to get decent print quality. Also, the ink cartridges are quite expensive and the biggest disadvantage is that inkjet printing does not provide a waterproof coating to the images. Hence, the color fades after some time.
Thermal printing, on the other hand, is much better since it not only applies a waterproof coating but is also better quality-wise. It is also more cost effective as the paper and ink cartridges used are cheaper.
Most of these printers can be purchased under $500. However, there are few key characteristics that are different in all these printers which determine their price. These are :
The printing width differs amongst printers. Normally the width is either 8.5″ or 13″.
If you want to print really great looking black-and-white images, then the printer needs to have grey inks as well. So, an 8-color printer would be best suited for this purpose.
Whether your printer has separate ink tanks for each color or does it have multiple inks in each cartridge. If you have multiple inks, then you have to replace the entire cartridge even if one color finishes. Hence, it is more expensive to replace such cartridges and you waste a lot of ink as well.
The ability of the printer to print directly from your camera or a memory card through a link.
The printing speed per minute. This can go up to 10 minutes for a colored snap, so you must properly check this out depending upon our usage.
