Understanding Carbohydrates: Some Help, Some Harm

Auto Date Saturday, June 14th, 2008

Until 30 year ago, most doctors felt that insulin was a good hormone and the more you have, the healthier you are. Then Gerald Reaven of Stanford showed that people with high insulin levels are at high risk for heart attacks because insulin constricts arteries to block those leading to the heart. Further research showed that insulin also is a fat hormone because it affects your hypothalamus in your brain to make you hungry, your liver to make more fat, and the fat cells in your belly to take up the fat, which makes YOU fatter.

Then in 1978, research showed that certain foods raise insulin more than others and foods can be classified by how high they raise blood sugar levels in comparison to eating pure refined sugar. When you eat, your blood sugar level rises and the higher blood sugar levels rise, the more insulin your pancreas releases to help lower sugar levels. So, what you eat is very important because foods that raise blood sugar levels the most are the ones most likely to raise blood insulin levels and increase your risk for a heart attack.

Carbohydrates are chains of sugar molecules lined in a row. They are found in all plants and foods made from plants such a bakery products and pastas. Carbohydrates can be a single sugar, two sugars bound together, three or four sugars. Thousands of sugars bound together are called starch, and millions of sugars bound together so tightly that you cannot break them down are called fiber. Only single sugars can pass from your intestines into your blood stream.

When you eat food that contains starch, your intestines release enzymes that knock off the end sugar and it is absorbed immediately. You continually knock off end sugars rapidly and they are absorbed almost immediately. All simple sugars and starches that are broken down rapidly go into the bloodstream rapidly to cause a high rise in blood sugar. Resistant starches contain long chains of sugars that cannot release their end sugars, so they can’t be absorbed and pass to the intestines where they are broken down to be converted into fatty acids that help prevent colon cancer and heart attacks.

That’s why you want to eat carbohydrates that release their sugars slowly and restrict carbohydrates that release sugars rapidly. The easier it is to break carbohydrates down into single sugars, the higher your blood sugar level rises and the more insulin you produce, which constricts arteries and increases your risk for a heart attack.

The most healthful carbohydrates are those left with fiber where nature puts it in seeds, nuts, beans, whole grains and vegetables. The most dangerous carbohydrates for diabetics and people who are trying to lose weight are foods made from flour, white rice or milled corn; or with added sugars.

The best carbohydrates are those that have a tight capsule that releases carbohydrates slowly such as whole grains such as wheat berries, rye berries, oat groats, quinoa, spelt, buckwheat and so forth; vegetables, beans, seeds and nuts.

Root vegetables contain stored sugar and cause a high rise in blood sugar levels, but they contain so many healthful nutrients that you need them to be healthy. So potatoes, carrots and beets can be eaten safely with other foods to slow absorption. For example, eating a potato with a piece of fish slows absorption of the sugars. The same applies to fruits. When you eat fruit in a vegetable salad, the sugar is absorbed slowly. When you eat the fruit alone, blood sugar levels rise quickly.

The most healthful way to eat is to leave nature alone. Eat carbohydrates the way nature packages them without first grinding them into very small pieces or squeezing them into juices that remove their fiber.

Health Goals - The Vitalism Philosophy

Auto Date Saturday, May 17th, 2008

Vitalism is a philosophy on health that is simple to follow and provides powerful effects. At its heart is the belief that living in pain or disease, of any type, is an unnatural state. More importantly, Vitalism suggests that pain and disease is a sign that a larger problem is underfoot.

Reducing pain and disease symptoms by fighting them with modern medicines and surgery will rarely touch the larger problem. New symptoms will arise, and new medicines and surgeries for this symptom will continue to weaken the body, harming its precious organs and destroying the body’s immune response strength. What is needed to understand is how to identify the greater problems behind the initial symptoms of pain or disease before they cause the arrival of larger, more complicated conditions.

There should be an adopted focus on learning the basics of Vitalism, and with each step, the discovering of major health conditions and understanding their underlying causes, of which may not often be considered or discussed in your doctors office, but which are nevertheless understood and well researched. This way of thinking is a positive means of finding more practical alternatives to drugs, expensive supplements, and surgeries.

Also central to the ‘vitalist’ philosophy is the key principle that a lack of symptoms does not mean health. Health is an abundance of energy. Health is a source of personal power and control over your personal and professional life, along with other relationships. Health is, also, control over your self. Health is having the ability to have your body do whatever you want your body to do.

While the ‘vitalist’ lifestyle is simple and enriching, to educate yourself away from the misinformation you have been fed over the years may take some time and commitment on your behalf. Every effort should be made to strive for information, expanding your understanding of how your mind and your body work together. Soon, you will understand that the food you eat, when eaten properly, brings you energy instead of draining energy. You will understand that the foods that bring you health are delicious and the unhealthy foods you crave are draining.

Through Vitalism, you will also learn how a lean, healthy physique is enjoyable to obtain and enjoyable to maintain. The same simple steps you need to take to reduce your body pains will bring you a healthier, leaner physique, and an invigorated organic system. We hope to educate you as to what these underlying forces of Vitalism may be and what remedies you may find.

Lower Your Cholesterol Naturally - Cholesterol Through The Mouth

Auto Date Monday, May 12th, 2008

If you have high cholesterol, you should educate yourself about the natural options that are available to you, to help lower your cholesterol, before diving head first into taking prescription medications…which are generally loaded with side effects, some of which can be dangerous and even fatal.

There are various options available to you, to help lower your cholesterol naturally and reduce or eliminate your risk of heart disease. You just need to arm yourself with the right information.

You probably know by now that cholesterol is made in the liver and your liver makes ALL the cholesterol that your body needs! Yes, you heard right…your liver makes ALL the cholesterol that your body needs!

With that being said, the major way that you get high cholesterol, is through the mouth! Because your liver makes ALL the cholesterol that your body needs, excess cholesterol must come through your mouth, from the foods you eat.

Lowering your cholesterol is as simple as making some changes to certain habits that you’ve formed. The first place to start is by looking at the kinds of foods you eat. Let’s face it, if we were a bit more careful with what we ate, we most likely wouldn’t have high cholesterol levels.

In saying that, the following statement would be true…”you’re as healthy as what you eat”.

And isn’t it amazing that something so simple could cure a major world health problem?

You see, food and what you eat should be the foundation of any healthy lifestyle. Food was meant to be enjoyed, and there are hundreds of delicious foods that are low in fat and cholesterol. The availability of low-fat and non-fat foods in supermarkets makes your “health journey” more enjoyable.

By changing your diet, you can reduce several of the risk factors for cardiovascular disease. Most important among these is lowering your LDL or ‘bad’ cholesterol levels. By making some changes and improving what you eat, you can reduce your risk of heart attack by around 20% to 30%. That’s right…20% to 30%!

There are many benefits, apart from just lowering your cholesterol, that can be enjoyed by improving your diet…these include:

• Lowering high blood pressure
• Reducing body fat
• Improving your blood sugar count
• Reducing the risk of a blood clot
• etc

Following is a brief outline of some steps that you can take to improve your diet and help to lower your cholesterol:

Reduce The Total Calories
Generally, the more you weigh over and above your ideal weight, the greater your risk of heart disease.

Please note that you should never attempt to lose weight irrationally by following a fad diet. Instead do it slowly and progressively…this will help to form new habits and makes it easier to follow

Simply cut down on foods that are rich in fat and cut down on your alcohol intake

Reduce Saturated Fats
Saturated fats have the most influential effect on raising LDL (bad) cholesterol levels. By just cutting out butter and using low-fat diary products you can shave 20% off your saturated fat intake.

Junk foods and fast foods generally have a high percentage of saturated fats, so stay away from them. Diary foods and eggs also generally have high saturated fat content. Please note: be really careful when using coconut or palm kernel oils as these have more saturated fat than lard!

Reduce Sugar Intake
Generally about 20% of calories, in a typical diet, come from sugar. “Empty” calories from sugar; take up space in your diet, restricting the intake of more nutritious foods, which can provide protein, vitamins and minerals

Increase Fiber
Soluble fiber has been known to reduce LDL (bad) cholesterol; without reducing HDL (good) cholesterol. Eat more fruits and vegetables, oat and corn bran and dried peas and beans. Around 40 grams per day can help to reduce cholesterol by 10%

Increase Fish
Fish oil has been shown to markedly lower triglyceride levels. Studies have also shown a direct link between eating fish and fewer heart attacks. Try to eat fish at least 2 to 3 times a week

There you have it, some simple guidelines to lowering your cholesterol and greatly improving your health. Sounds simple, yes…but to really make a change you have to focus on changing some habits and the best way to do that is to do it in small progressive steps.

Start now by taking some time out to reflect upon:

• The wrong kinds of foods that you have been buying

• What you will add and what will you eliminate from your shopping list from today and onwards

• The wrong kinds of snacks that you’ve been eating

• What you can substitute that will help you in your efforts

Also be very mindful when eating out (and I’m not just talking about fancy restaurants), because this is where most people fail when it comes to healthy eating!

Wishing you the very best in your endeavors

How To Prevent The Flu

Auto Date Thursday, May 8th, 2008

Can you prevent the flu? or is it just luck when you are virus free all year long! The flu is a highly contagious viral infection of the upper respiratory tract. Because this illness can be spread easily by coughing and sneezing, influenza epidemics are very common, especially in winter. More than 200 different viruses can cause colds and flu, and strains of these viruses are constantly changing, so vaccinations against influenza have been only partly successful in preventing out breaks of this disease.

The symptoms of influenza begin much like those of the common cold head ache, fatigue, and body aches. In many cases, a fever develops, and you may feel unbearably hot one moment and chilled and shaking the next. Most influenza sufferers have a dry throat and cough. Nausea and vomiting may occur as well. Often a person with the flu is so weak and uncomfortable that he or she may not feel like eating or doing anything else.

WHAT YOU CAN DO TO PREVENT THE FLU?

Build you immune system and stay healthy by;

  • Eliminating as much stress from your life as possible.

  • Drinking plenty of water Eating a healthy diet, high in protein, fresh fruit and vegetables.

  • Avoiding sugar, caffeine, & alcohol.

  • Taking a high quality liquid, herbal multi vitamin with minerals (To learn more about testing vitamins for quality and assimilation into the body visit www.herbs4health.net read Chapter Nine of the my eBook ” 9 Steps To A Healthy Vibrant Body ” )

  • Washing your hands often with antibacterial soap Getting plenty of rest Exercising a least three times a week Staying away from people with viruses If symptoms of influenza or a cold appear, immediately take a herbal product with Ginger & Echinacea as the main ingredients. (There are many of these available, the best are liquid herbal extracts made from plants)

SHOULD YOU HAVE A FLU SHOT TO PREVENT THE FLU?

Before you can answer that question, you need to learn more about flu shots. What is in a flu shot? There are approximately three different strains of the flu virus in each shot. These include some unknown substances, as most vaccines are grown and strained through animal or human tissues. In addition other vaccine constituents such as; Ethylene glycol (antifreeze) Phenol (carbolic acid ) Formaldehyde ( a cancer causing agent ) Aluminum (known for it’s association with Alzheimer’s disease ) Thimerosal (an antiseptic for cleaning wounds) Neomycin & Streptomycin (antibiotic) are found!

Believe it or not but, in the studies at VRAN (Vaccination Risk Awareness Network), statistics show that, with or without a vaccination only 1 % of the population is treated in hospital for pneumonia or flu. Also there are many different viruses throughout the world, and it is almost impossible to guess which virus will travel to your area. This makes a person wonder how they can choose which virus to inject you with? Another fact to consider is that of all the illnesses that come upon us in the winter months only 10 to 15% of them are influenza virus. To learn more visit www.demarcomd.com/vran/vaccines/flu/flu_severyn.htm

You have read the facts that your body can fight viruses. Your body and your immune system is designed to cure itself. Use this information to make you body healthier. With small changes in your life you can have a healthy vibrant body.

Losing Weight with the help of Hoodia Gordonii

Auto Date Thursday, May 1st, 2008

Losing weight has been a very difficult task for so many people.
In a day and age where physical fitness is a must, many forms of
exercises and diets have been devised. While some people have
the discipline to keep to their diet and do daily exercises,
there are of course those who do find going on diets and losing
weight an impossible task.

While most diets nowadays concentrate on the number of calories
and carbohydrates a person intake, another form of diet from
South Africa provides the body a sense of fullness even with the
slightest amount of food intake using a weight loss supplement
called Hoodia Gordonii. Taking Hoodia is not a permission to eat
and binge. If you keep eating like you always have, you’re going
to gain weight. What Hoodia does is suppress your hunger,
allowing you to take control over your eating. It is a natural
substance that takes your appetite away; it works by suppressing
your appetite and stops you from thinking about food, Hoodia
contains a molecule that fools your brain and makes it believe
that you are full, making it easier to lose excess weight and
skip meals painlessly and easily.

The only way you’re going to lose weight is to eat less. Hoodia,
in sufficient doses, may give you the tool to do that, freeing
you from the prison of hunger pains. However, Hoodia can’t
control your arms, your mouth and your tongue. If you keep on
eating, you’re going to get fat, plain and simple. Also, Hoodia
Gordonii isn’t going to get you into shape. If you really desire
to lose weight, the best thing you can do for your body is to
add some lean muscle mass to your body by engaging in
cardiovascular exercise like walking, jogging and strength
trainings.

You just need to drink plenty of water, and it can actually take
away your thirst and help you control your hunger and reduces
your calorie intake per day. Eat too many calories and we all
know what happens, too few calories reduces metabolic rate, so
you need enough protein to build muscles mass, maintain healthy
skin, hair and nails and feed your brain.

Calories, proteins, carbohydrates and water are also our
essential needs and Hoodia Gordonii gives an excellent rule in
balancing the entire food intake in the body.

By reducing your caloric intake and with increased exercise you
will immediately begin losing weight. Your body can never be fat
out of nothing. Hoodia will make you feel full for 24 hours and
you can stay in this diet as long as you can, just as long as
you consult a dietary expert. Never forget that your body also
needs the nutrients.

Don’t think you can take a mega-dose of Hoodia and turn off your
hunger completely, and not eat for days until the fat
disappears. This is the wrong attitude. Your body will suffer
with the sudden deprivation of food and nutrients. It is always
best to consult a doctor and a nutritionist so you do not put
your body in unnecessary danger.

Diabetic Diet - The Visual Plate Method

Auto Date Tuesday, April 22nd, 2008

How do you know what foods to eat? Maybe you like rice or pasta or grits or other starchy foods that need insulin to process these foods.

How much of the starchy or carbohydrate (CHO) foods can I eat? Well that depends on if you need to lose weight, gain weight or maintain your weight.

I think the most prudent way of eating the foods you love and at the same time not putting too much strain on the pancreas to spit out insulin, is to eat in moderation.

What I mean by moderation is using the Visual Plate Method. Believe it or not, this is one way of controlling your food intake, as well as how much carbohydrate or starchy foods you include with your meal.

So what does the Visual Plate Method mean. All it means is look at your plate with your food in it. If all you see is rice, or grits or sweet food as the majority of your plate, then you are way off base. You should include a green leafy vegetable or salad, Protein food (eggs , meat, fish, cheese) and a small portion of starchy vegetables or rice, pasta or whatever other carbohydrate.

Since I work as a visiting nurse, I try to explain to the patients that you don’t have to go to extremes. It doesn’t matter what culture and foods that you like. It matters that you need to portion control your starchy vegetables (peas, carrots, corn, peas, potatoes) and your CHO foods (rice, pasta, and other starchy foods) with each meal.

If you decide you want peas and carrots, then eat very little rice or pasta. If you eat green leafy vegetables, then you can eat more rice or pasta.

Protein foods do not raise your blood sugar, so you can add more fish, eggs, meat, etc with your meals. As long as your cholesterol isn’t too high (eggs and meats) and you are not a Kidney patient, there should be no reason why you can’t eat more protein foods. Protein foods that contain their own natural fat actually help curb your appetite. It is the CHO that stimulate your appetite.

If you are a teenager, then following a diet is much harder. If you eat potato chips, then no starch with your meal. I’m not saying to eat potato chips but realistically teenagers eat a little more junk foods than normal. Let’s not make our teenagers neurotic about eating exactly the foods that parents may insist on. If they don’t eat it in front of you, they will do it behind your back.

Whenever you eat a meal or snack, it should always include a small amount of protein that has its own natural fat. The protein food with its own natural fat tends to hold onto the food longer so that your blood sugar doesn’t spike and then drop immediately. That can happen if you have a piece of fruit and no protein food with it. Also, eating just a piece of fruit can make you hungrier. That’s where the protein food helps to curb the appetite.

I also tell my patients not to drink any juice unless your blood sugar is low. It is better to eat the fruit than drink the juice.

Also recommended is if you like soda, then drink diet soda sweetened with Splenda. There is too much controversy with Nutrasweet or Aspartame. If you ever read the instruction for Nutrasweet, you cannot cook with it as it changes into a substance when heated that is not good for the body. Check online about the hazards of Aspartame or Nutrasweel and you make your own judgment. You will notice that Pepsi, Coke, 7Up are now going with Splenda. Thank You So Much!!!!!

As always, you need to consult with your doctor. A diabetes educator and dietician can do wonders for your diet.

4d baby scans - www.babyultrasound.co.uk

Auto Date Thursday, April 17th, 2008

The method know as 3d ultrasound is used during early pregnancy, it can provide 3d pictures of the unborn baby. Most times these images are quickly collected and combined to make a “4d ultrasound”.

Three dimensional scanning works in a similar manner to the traditional ultrasound except that the ultrasound scanning waves are sent from many directions. The ultrasound pulses are redirected back then captured to provide info to construct a 3d image in much the same way as 3d pictures. 3 dimesional ultasound scanning was devised by olaf ramm and stephen smith.

It’s important to understand that sonologists all over the world have always conjured 3d images of anatomy or pathology in their minds while carrying out 2d scans. However, until recently it was very difficult to do this kind of reconstruction on on info using ultrasound. With the advent of ultrasound baby scans for the first time allowed us a view into the brain of a sonologist and so letting us see the images on the ultrasound machine.

4d ultrasound imaging should utilize ultrasound energy following the same limits as conventional 2d ultrasound to create the 3d images. There is no data to suggest any harm due to 3d ultasound scanning, its use in none essential situations should be undertaken with an understanding of the risks that exist.

Mesotherapy Risks

Auto Date Friday, April 11th, 2008

Proponents of Mesotherapy emphasize that risks of treatment are minimized because lower doses of compounds are injected into a relatively small area. However, there are certain known and potentially unknown risks associated with Mesotherapy.

The majority of known Mesotherapy Risks are in and around the injection site. Skin may become pigmented or scarred, and these changes may not fade with time. Other changes, such as swelling, pain and bruising, typically subside after treatment. In some people, a severe local reaction to substances injected may result in ulceration and subsequent scarring. There may also be a systemic and potentially life-threatening allergic reaction to injected drugs. Infections due to poor injection practices are often reported among patients of unlicensed Mesotherapy practitioners. These infections may require treatment with expensive antibiotics.

There is some concern in the medical community that several compounds commonly used in Mesotherapy have unproven benefits and unknown risks. There are many Internet sites that sell such compounds. However, most of them are located overseas and are therefore outside the jurisdiction of the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA). The purity of compounds sold by such sites cannot be verified. To date, the FDA has not approved any compound for use in Mesotherapy, even if such a compound is approved for other uses. Additionally, the American Society of Plastic Surgeons does not endorse Mesotherapy because it is not a scientifically proven method.

Many Mesotherapy treatments require ongoing maintenance, and the costs involved in such maintenance therapy may be underestimated initially. This can be a financial risk because Mesotherapy is not covered by health insurance plans. There may also be emotional risks, particularly with treatments that require adherence to a diet and exercise plan. If such a plan is not followed, the body may revert to its pre-Mesotherapy appearance, causing stress.

Mesotherapy provides detailed information about mesotherapy, cost of mesotherapy, mesotherapy before and after, mesotherapy injections and more. Mesotherapy is the sister site of Mesothelioma Doctors Info.
