Getting Real Interviews at a Career Faire

Auto Date Friday, January 29th, 2010

Standing out at a Career Fair can make a difference in your career search. Job Fairs are starting to pick up, and Dice is running some nice ones, called Targeted Job Fairs. At a SF Bay Area Job Faire in January, 10 companies as showing up, and a major job search company has 82 career faires scheduled for this year across the US.

How do you get to the real interviews at a Job Fair? The competition can be significant, but you can help yourself jump out from the gang with early homework. At AA-Careers, we have a simple 6-step process to prepare. Planning to go? Here’s how to prepare:

First, investigate the companies that are going and pick your objectives. Use the internet to check out the organizations that are there ahead of time. Go to their internet sites and see if they have their job openings posted. Pick a rational number to go after, and get ready to spend up to an hour researching each one. It’s hard to do more than eight in a day, and five or six is a much more reasonable target. For each hiring organization, you want to know: recent news, key product lines, and exectuve names. Try to see if you know anyone at the target companies. You should end up with a page or two of research for each company/job.

Second, if there are job postings on the web, read them to see what the organization is looking for. Create a mapping of your accomplishments and skills to the demands of the job. Make the terminology match. If the hiring company calls customers "clients", your resume should do the same thing. The accomplishments should be written in the style of the hiring organization.

Third, create a ‘short sales pitch’ for each likely company/job combination. Write down a 90 second ‘thumbnail’ that you can repeat verbally depicting why you are a fantastic prospect for that job. You’ll use this in your resume and when you meet people at the job kiosk.

Fourth, modify your resume for each job type. The objective on your resume should exactly match the job you’re aiming for. The executive summary should be a written form of your “mini sales pitch” for the job. Then choose the achievements and skills that most clearly match the job requirements. Especially at a Job Faire, the purpose of your resume is a sales tool for you – to get you on-site job interviews. It should be a no-brainer to see that you’re a match based on your resume.

Fifth, dress and prepare as if you’re doing on-site interviews. Dress nicely and be properly groomed. Don’t overdress (this isn’t a date!) and don’t underdress (no jeans or t-shirts, no matter how much you paid for them). Avoid strong cologne or perfume.

Finally, practice your ‘mini-sales-pitch’. Collect your research and the resume for each opportunity - bring a couple of copies for each – and put each in a distinctly tagged folder. Keep them in a light briefcase or folio.

Remember to smile, and good hunting!

Excited about Italy (well, wouldn’t you be?)

Auto Date Thursday, June 26th, 2008

I’m so excited about my upcoming trip to Italy. I’m one of those people that likes to get every last detail planned out- down to how much i can expect to pay for the taxi from the station to my hotel. I’m going to Taormina for most of the time I’m there and I’ll be staying at a few places, the Hotel Timeo to begin with (it came recommended).

There’s a great website about this fascinating little town- just search for ‘Taormina’- it’s the top hit on google. It’s been written by the local people, so no kind of corporate affiliation, and just has all the most interesting places to visit in the area. Turns out there are loads! All that aside though, I’m most looking forward to my first proper morning there (I should get in quite late the next day). I’m going to go exploring on foot and find my local coffee stop. Then I’m going to sit there and read my book and just soak up as much ‘Italy’ as I can. Really can’t wait.

Of course, one of the other main aims for this trip is for me to pick up some more Italian. I’ve been told on countless occasions that the only real way to learn this beautiful language is to immerse yourself in the country and try and soak it up through your very pores. Did I say I can’t wait?
